About our Firewood

Fernwoods supplies seasoned hardwood ready for use on open fires or woodburning stoves. In simple terms, the word 'seasoned' means 'dry'.

Some trees make better firewood than others. Broadleaf trees are denser than conifers so provide more heat energy volume for volume.

We use hardwood as the density of hardwood is much greater than softwood, i.e. hardwood cell structure is much more complex. It is the density of the wood which prolongs its burning time.

Therefore a stack of hardwood used for firewood is of greater value to the customer than the same volume of softwood.

We purchase our timber from sustainable stock during the winter months ready for processing.

Air is allowed to flow through the stacks of cut and split logs whilst they are left to season. Seasoning wood is not just a matter of cutting your wood and throwing it into a pile. Dry wood is achieved by our specific actions taken at the right time. Properly seasoned firewood has a low moisture content and is a pleasure to use.

Some firewood suppliers may claim to have wood "cut last summer", or "two years old" and so on, but, if the wood has been heaped in a field or just recently split, it will prevent your fire from performing to its potential. This is particularly true of the modern woodburning stoves which perform extremely well when given the right fuel.
